In an exclusive article posted by Wired earlier today, containing details about the new video game console Sony has been working on. Are you ready for the next gen?
So let's get this out of the way, the new system is not coming in 2019. As I believed earlier during E3 2018 these next gen consoles are looking to hit the market in 2020. Now that your breathing lets break down the details of the next gen system.
The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD's Ryzen line and has eight cores of the new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture.
Is a custom variant of Radeon's Navi family and will support ray tracing. If ray tracing sounds new to you then your in luck, this is a newer technology that has been recently supported. What it does is takes a new systematic approach to reflections in the world and how everything "Sees" everything. Basically this means all the reflections in games are going to become a whole lot nicer and move beyond boring blobs or smears.
A new audio focus
Because of the support of ray tracing the graphics are not just getting an improvement but so is the audio. The new unit is able to trace these rays as audio points and allows for new immersion options for the gamers. Specifically the new system will have a custom unit for 3D audio as well.
The Hard Drive
We are finally going to a solid state drive! This is huge for the home console market as solid state hard drives provide faster loading times overall for EVERYTHING! For example on the PS4 Pro and playing Insomniac Game's Spider-Man when fast traveling it took 15 seconds to process the request. Where as on the next gen system it only took 0.8 seconds for the same exact request.
If you think 4K was finally becoming affordable get ready to upgrade once more, the next gen system will support 8K resolutions!
Yes the next gen system will accept physical media and won't be just a download-only machine. Also it will be backwards compatible with PS4 games.
As for anything else it is all under wraps, we might hear something around E3 but keep in mind the Sony will not be attending.
